High School Equivalency Diploma / ESL

NCC’s Adult Literacy Department
The Adult Literacy Department at NCC offers free classes in the areas of High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) Preparation (formerly known as the GED®), Spanish High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) Preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL) in many communities in NCC’s district (which includes the counties of Osceola, O’Brien, Sioux, Lyon, and the MMC School District in Cherokee County). NCC’s FREE HSED Preparation Classes
HSED stands for High School Equivalency Diploma. In the past, Iowans took the GED® test to obtain their HSED; Iowa has now moved to the HiSET® test which was developed by ETS.

NCC offers orientations, class and practice tests to help prepare students for the HiSET® Exam. The steps to earn your HiSET diploma are:
  1. Sign up for an orientation (see schedule below) by calling (712) 324-5061 ext 137.
  2. Attend the orientation where you will learn more about NCC’s free HSED preparation classes and take an entry test to determine your skill level.
  3. You will speak to or meet with an instructor to discuss your scores and your options for classes.
  4. You will begin attending a mandatory class (most classes are on an 8 week schedule).
  5. At the end of the class, your skill level will be evaluated with a test in both reading and math.
  6. Depending on the class you attend and your improvement, you will either move up to another class or take the one or more of the five subject practice tests.
  7. After you pass a subject practice test, you may schedule and take the final test for that subject.
  8. Once you have taken and passed all five subject tests you will have earned your Iowa High School Equivalency Diploma.

NCC’s Free Spanish HSED Preparation Classes
NCC ofrece clases gratis de preparación para el Diploma Equivalente a la Preparatoria en Español (HSED por sus siglas en inglés). Pare iniciar su camino y obtener su HSED siga los siguientes pasos:

  1. Comience por asistir a una de las siguientes clases.
  2. Los estudiantes deben estudiar cada materia en clase por lo menos 8 horas.
  3. Después de haber estudiado al menos 8 horas cada materia en clase, podrá tomar el examen de practica
  4. Después de pasar cada materia del examen de práctica, puede hacer una cita y tomar el examen final.
  5. Una vez que ha tomado y pasado todas las cinco materias usted habrá obtenido su Diploma Equivalente de Preparatoria.

NCC’s Free English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes
Free classes help teach local English Language Learners to speak, hear, read and write English as it is relevant to their lives. Topics include health, shopping, employment, daily living, food, and more! Classes are free. Students need to purchase their own workbook if they would like to use it outside of the classroom or write in it. All levels of English Language Learners are welcome. Depending on the location and demand for instruction, classes may be offered based on the levels of the students (for example: an English Language Learners Beginners or Advanced class).

Clase para Estudiantes Aprendices del Idioma Ingles conocido como (ELL):
Las clases gratuitas enseñan a Estudiantes Aprendices del Idioma Ingles a hablar, escuchar, leer y escribir Ingles ya que es relevante para sus vidas. Los temas incluyen salud, compras, trabajo, vida diaria comida y más! Las clases son gratis. Los estudiantes necesitan pagar su propio libro de trabajo si quieren utilizarlo fuera del salón de clases y escribir en él. Todos los niveles de Aprendizaje del Idioma Ingles son bienvenidos. Dependiendo de la localidad y la demanda de instrucción, las clases pueden ser ofrecidas basadas en los niveles de los estudiantes (por ejemplo: Principiantes del Aprendizaje del Idioma Ingles o clases Avanzadas).
