Checklist / Timelines


Parent of a Middle School Student
  • Discuss career opportunities with your student
  • Discuss the learning outcomes of NCC’s 8th Grade Career Day with your student
  • Encourage your student to be involved in extra-curricular activities in school and outside of school
  • Instill in your student that successful grades in middle school are important
  • Remind your student to stay out of trouble in school and outside of school
  • Be involved with your student’s four year high school plan
  • Attend high school orientation with your student
Parent of a High School Freshman
  • Be involved with your student’s goals for the future
  • Assist your student with choosing courses that support your student’s future goals…it is better to take more challenging courses….math and writing are required in all NCC Programs!
  • Encourage your student to earn good grades…the freshman year is the beginning of the high school transcript which is evaluated for admission to NCC
  • Assist your student in developing a list of high school and community accomplishments
Parent of a High School Sophomore
  • Visit colleges with your student during a summer family vacation
  • Attend college fairs with your student
  • Discuss outcomes of the ACT PLAN test and PSAT …these tests are taken in the fall of the sophomore year which prepares students for the ACT
  • Encourage your student to take the ACT in Spring or Summer or the COMPASS assessment at NCC
  • Begin to research financial aid opportunities with your student
  • Encourage your student to attend academic summer camps
Parent of a High School Junior
  • Encourage your student to continue sophomore checklist
  • Encourage your student to take college prep courses at their high school or college credit courses at NCC
  • Encourage your student to participate in organized extracurricular high school activities, community organizations, and to obtain a summer part-time job
  • Encourage your student to SAVE money
  • Encourage your student to job shadow
  • Encourage your student to read NCC’s Viewbook and other NCC college brochures
  • Begin exploring scholarship opportunities with your student
  • Encourage your student to retake the ACT or COMPASS assessment
Parent of a High School Senior

Fall
  • Encourage your student to retake ACT or the COMPASS Assessment at NCC
  • Attend college fairs with your student
  • Encourage your student to keep an NCC file that includes all correspondence
  • Visit the NCC campus with your student
  • Assist your student in completing an application for admission (If applying for NCC’s Nursing, Radiologic Technology, Heavy Equipment, or Powerline programs your student needs to apply the fall of their junior year.)
  • Assist your student with completing scholarship applications…many are due by January 1! Many of NCC’s are due April 1!
  • Encourage your student to submit a housing application
Spring
  • File your taxes early!
  • Assist your students in submitting the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)…NCC’s ID number is 004600
  • If your student has not made a campus visit to NCC, attend a campus visit with your student
  • Assist your student in sending deposits for enrollment and housing
Summer
  • Attend NCC’s Orientation with your student…orientations are in June
  • Assist your student with listing things needed for college
  • Encourage your student to connect with their roommate if living on the campus of NCC
  • Remind your student about debt and their responsibility…review money management and college budget…avoid credit card offers!
