Northwest Iowa Community College has a very active local chapter with an
average of 80 members.
NCC students competed at the National Skills USA Conference in Kansas City during the week of June 23, 2008. The conference is an annual event where career and technical education students from around the United States showcase their skills. Skills USA is the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical, and health occupations education.
The following NCC students competed and received recognition for placing in their category:
• Industrial Motor Controls: 1st place in the nation, Jesse Bormann, Bancroft, IA.
• Mechatronics: 2nd place team in the nation, David Hilliard, Storm Lake, IA; and Brad
Matson, Buffalo Center, IA.
• Related Technical Math: 4th place in the nation, Anthony Bleeker, Hartley, IA.
• Automated Manufacturing Technology: 5th place team in the nation, Neil Schettler,
Sheldon, IA; Adrian Fintelman, Hull, IA; and Eric Doyle, Sheldon, IA.
• Collision Repair: 6th place in the nation, Travis McVay, Sioux Falls, SD.
• Residential Wiring: 7th place in the nation, Caleb Schroeder, Glidden, IA.
• Technical Drafting: 8th place in the nation, Joe Kuehler, Spencer, IA.
• Welding (High School): 25th place in the nation, Brian Alexander, Sibley, IA.
Students from Northwest Iowa Community College, Sheldon, IA, competed in the 2008 Iowa
State Skills USA Championships held on April 24 & 25 in Des Moines, Iowa. NCC students
won six gold medals, nine silver medals, and four bronze medals. The following list of students

During the competitions students worked against the clock and each other, proving their
expertise in occupations like electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, medical
assisting and culinary arts. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and
labor organizations, and test competencies are set by industry.
Skills USA is a national partnership of students, teachers and industry, working together to
ensure America has a skilled workforce. Skills USA chapters help students who are preparing for
careers in technical, skilled and service occupations excel. Skills USA has more than 300,000
students and instructors as members.
Each year NCC has consistently brought home awards and several national qualifiers from state
Skills USA competition. The first place winners of the Iowa Skills USA Championships will go
on to compete in the national event to be held the last full week of June in Kansas City.
Students from Northwest Iowa Community College, Sheldon, IA, competed in the 2007 Iowa
State Skills USA Championships held at Northwest Iowa Community College, Sheldon, Iowa,
on April 19 and 20, 2007. NCC brought home 12 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 2 bronze
medals with 12 students advancing on to the national event. The following list of students is

Members become involved with activities on campus as well as within the
communities. Fundraising, including the Tool Fest, Pizza Ranch coupons,
and the NCC Duck Dive. Community service projects, including the Adopt-A-Family
and canned food drive during the holidays and the Adopt-A-Highway project.
Social events as planned.

Competition is a big part of Skills USA. Local competitions will be held
in February and state competitions are held the first week in April. State
competitions are held at various community colleges on a rotating basis.
Those qualifying for nationals, then compete in Kansas City in June. Eleven
NCC students competed at the National Skills USA Conference this past summer.
