SPAN II

Northwest Iowa Community College works with area high schools to provide fifth-year senior services to students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Services to students in this program include specialized tutoring, career assessment, academic and personal counseling.
Students who participate in this program must be recommended by the high school. If you are a parent or student desiring this service, please contact your high school counselor. The student’s IEP is developed and managed by the high school, with input from the NCC SPAN II Coordinator.

The SPAN II office is located in the NCC Learning Center.  For more information please:

History of the SPAN Program

Since 1982, SPAN (Secondary Program at NCC), an AEA Special Education Program has existed on the NCC campus. This program provided support to fifth year special education students who were attending NCC on an IEP.

One hundred sixty three students have been served by SPAN since its inception. Funding for SPAN came from dollars the participating Local Education Agencies paid to the Area 4 Special Education Pool. A few years ago Area 4 Superintendents elected to remove the SPAN program from the pool leaving the funding of services for individual students to their districts. AEA 4 then notified the College that it would be totally eliminating SPAN. Recognizing the valuable support that SPAN personnel provided and as a result of requests from multiple Local Education Associations and the concerns of parents who had students enrolled in this program, NCC worked with the local districts to develop an alternative program. Because of the recognition of the name, “SPAN”, the new program was named SPAN II (Special Programming at NCC).
